  • History of the Donner Party C.F. McGlasham - Chapter 8
The quote below from the history of the Donner Party from chapter 08 always intriged me. I wonder if this Col. McKinstry was connected to my McKinstry family. "Mrs. Tamsen Donner kept a journal, but this, with her paintings and botanical collections, disappeared at the fatal tent on Alder Creek. Mr. Breen's diary alone was preserved. He gave it into Col. McKinstry's possession in the spring of 1847, and on the fourth of September of that year it was published in the Nashville (Tenn.) Whig. A copy of the Whig of that date is furnished by Wm. G. Murphy, of Marysville. Other papers have published garbled extracts from this diary, but none have been reliable. The future history of the events which transpired at the cabins will be narrated in connection with this diary."

Little Jimmy

  • Page a34x Little Jimmy
Each of us lives a Novel some of us live several. These pages are a little of what I have lived before I became Grandpa Jim. While you read my pages, think about placing at least a few of your memories down in spiral note books. Do not worry about a sequence; just write the memories or thought down put your approximate age at the top along with a title. You get there one page at a time...... All copy rights reserved December 2005 All photos may not be copied or used without my permission. A little like breaking into my home and eating our food. (I will add more pages from time to time)

Branson, Missouri

  • Missouri - Cooper Creek Resort Marlin RV 2001
I love visiting Branson. Many of my childhood heroes have wandered off into the sunset, but the memories of them still lingers. Plus Camping at Cooper Creek and fishing Lake Tanny Como and then see a show in the evening was great. For my brother Steve I share with him memories of Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, both Triggers and Bullet the dog. Oh ya! "Nellie Belle" as well. The Roy Rogers Museum moved to Branson in I believe 2003. I did tease my brother Steve about Bullet.

Country roads 1

  • Texas - SAN JAUN BASILICA STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Behind this cover will be a few of my favorite photos. Most will be photos I have taken on our trips. However some will be photos taken by family. I enjoy the rustic and rusty photos. It is a shame this generation can not go back in time and visit a time with out conveniences. I remember playing with rocks, corncobs, match boxe, sticks, wire, string and a horse curry comb. I never knew I was poor. This album will change constantly, it is used as a sorting place as well as favorites. All photos may not be copied or used without my permission. A little like breaking into my home and eating our food.

Coal mines & cousin Doug

  • Iowa, a McKinstry JW age 15 coal hauling
I hope one day I get to video cousin Doug when he does one of these Coal mine talks. He does a great job and he won't live for ever. Some where in my massive files I have other coal mine photos. The question is where? It is my hope that those who look at these pages who have family who worked in coal mines will make a comment on the blog part of my site. I would very much like to see photos - maps and strories about Newton, Iowa and Jasper County.

Greenland Thule & 1 year of my life.

  • Greenland 1955 McK Memories Greenland midnight
The photo on the cover was taken at midnight with a full sun. I am the dashing figure on the left. I spent a year at Thule Greenland in 1955-1956 Thule was originally built for use during WWII. My Thule Greenland pages are part of my genealogy and book “Little Jimmy”. So the Greenland pages will also eventually show up on “Little Jimmy” as well. They are protected under copyright laws. The book "Little Jimmy" is part of my scratch in the sand for future generations to know a little of what I have lived. It is I repeat a part of my genealogy, not a great novel. Much has changed at Thule and to this young 17 year old boy who went into the Air Force in 1955. Like all young men – I knew little about life, but soon the lessons and learning curves were at my door. Some of the more recent photos you see in this album I borrowed from the Thule Web site you will find at the left, as well as my site Grandpa Jim that is not built as yet. I hope to write a little bit and place some of my story in the Old Timer section. (Note) When a photo is borrowed from another Thule person I will do my best to say so in my Album. There is much history about Thule Greenland. I will try to put those links with-in my blog and Albums. Please leave comments under your real name or nick name. Fishing & Camping

  • P1010141
Fishing & Camping has changed much over the years. Many years ago I would just tramp down the river a few miles and fish or set lines over the night. Sleeping on the ground did not bother me much at that time. Then when two sons were big enough it was a tent pitched anywhere I wished, along with chile on the fire for 7 days or more. Now I lay me down in an RV with a shower bed and kitchen. Click here for Iowa fishing; http://www.iowadnr.gov/fish/fishing/fishia.html All photos may not be copied or used without my permission. • Mexico - Texas Progresso US side insect trap made of wasp nest
The streets in Progresso, Mexico have many panhandlers or beggers on the streets. I felt sorry for this lady and child. I asked her if I could take her picture, she said yes and I put $5.00 in her cup, she quickly took it out of the cup and put it in a safe place.

Newton, Iowa, Jasper County

  • P1010170
Newton, Iowa was once called "Washer City" It had several washing machine factories, one was the "Maytag Company". Maytag is now owned by Whirlpool. The parking meters are no longer around the square, so I would imagine this photo to have been taken in the 1970s. All photos may not be copied or used without my permission.
